3 Things You Can Do To Develop a ‘Positive Thought’ Garden ?

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NIV)

On Saturday I was at a seminar getting more information about the Juice Plus supplement that I take.

Since after several months, I know it’s making a remarkable difference in terms of my overall health stability and energy level. I learned a great deal about the supplement and how it’s manufactured and read a host of research reports on its effectiveness.

While at the seminar I was introduced to an amazing product they have created called the Tower Garden ©. It’s a vertical organic garden and It allows you to grow vegetables indoors or outside. It was really quite astounding. They showed us, you place the seeds in different areas around the center of this vertical garden, and because of the AeroPonic system, and the addition of a solution called “Tower Tonic” which was developed by leading world experts in plant and human nutrition, this is solution specifically designed to promote the rapid growth of all types of food and flowering crops.

If you saw the time lapse video you see how these plants grow quickly in this environment…It’s pretty amazing

positive thoughtWhile watching this video of how over 4 short weeks these plants quickly grow, it occurred to me that this is a lot like our mind….

Our mind is like a garden of sorts with our thoughts, being the seeds that are planted in which will grow. Just like a garden, we can either have a bounty of wholesome healthy, strong life-giving plants, or a tangle of weeds and briers that choke out the potential life that we can experience.

We can choose either a positive thought garden or a negative one, as our thinking is something we must take charge over because if we don’t, it will control us…

In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us that we need to be intentional about focusing our minds:

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things’ Philippians 4:8 (NASB).

Doesn’t it make sense to focus our mind on the good things in life? Shouldn’t we focus on what is true rather than what is not? We are to spend our time thinking about things that are genuine, accurate and reliable.James makes that clear:

“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow”.James 1:17 (NASB)

Since God is absolutely good, it’s only logical to assume that he pours millions of good thoughts into our minds every day, thoughts of love, kindness, goodness, courage and blessing. However, there is an opposite side of good, and that comes through the one who comes to steal, kill and destroy. The opposite of light. Satan works through the mind.

Certain types of sickness, addiction, failure, and adversity are the result of wrong thinking. Now, I want to be clear here, not all sickness or adversity comes from wrong thinking. It would be nice just believe that happy thoughts will produce nothing but fame, fortune and good health, but that’s not always the case. People get sick for many reasons, sometimes genetics, sometimes through infection and a host of other reasons. However, in my experience, the thoughts I choose to allow to be planted in my mind determined the health care choices which I made, which has greatly impacted my survival and quality of life.

Therefore, we must then consciously correct our thinking habits, for if thoughts are like seeds we plan in the garden of our mind then they will produce a harvest, which we will surely reap.

On Our Own

I want to say in my opinion,  I do not believe it is humanly possible for me in my own power to create the soil that will sustain a positive life giving “thought garden”. God is the master gardener. I must give my mind to him on a daily basis and ask him to provide me with right mix of nutrients and the soil in which to plan my thoughts. The failure of most positive thinking courses I found is that it leaves it all up to the individual to manufacture the good soil. It’s painfully clear in my experience that my heart is not a place that naturally contains good soil and scripture totally agrees!

“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful,a puzzle that no one can figure out.
But I, GOD, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human.I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are,not as they pretend to be.”

Jeremiah 17:9 The Message (MSG)

Our Part

So how do we do this? We don’t naturally think godly thoughts. We have to work at it. Just like tending the garden, and with conscious effort toward clearing the weeds..

It all begins with surrendering our actions to Christ moment by moment

Here’s a plan that I’m going to begin doing on a daily basis.

1. Every morning when I wake up, I will commit myself to Jesus and invite him and his life giving thoughts into my mind. I’m going to confess my faith that every good and perfect gift comes from God and that every destructive negative thought has its roots in the schemes of the devil. I know if I yield myself to God, he will fill me with his good and holy intentions.

2. During the day, whenever I face a situation that calls for a response, or whenever new thoughts come into my mind. I’m going to ask myself, are these thoughts that are uplifting or are they divisive? Are they leaving leading me in a positive path or are they filling me with selfishness, anger, uncertainty or sadness?

3. As soon as I identify the source of these thoughts, I’m going to deal with them accordingly, right there on the spot. I will consciously allow the positive ones to occupy my mind, and I will choose to take captive the negative ones, that is, to rid myself of the thoughts that drag me down and distract me. This is what it means to dwell on what is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, and whatever is commendable.

Just like in the Tower Garden time lapse video , I want to spend the next four weeks, making this into a habit, and i’m excited about the bounty that will grow. I’d really like some feedback from anyone on what is working for you. I’m really just looking for a simple set of things I can do every day to keep the garden of my mind free of weeds and growing healthy life producing thoughts. Now this isn’t some whippy dippy positive thought idea, it’s surrender to Christ no matter what the circumstances look like.

And I might get my Daughter one of these  tower gardens, it would be way cool  for her to have healthy organic vegetables year round!
